Mark Driscoll is Angry About Rabbis Teaching at Church
I was told by a friend that Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Seattle preached about a Rabbi who is teaching at a local church. Because of the passion Pastor Mark showed, the sermon caused my friend to decide to leave the City Church. Thank you Pastor Mark.
I listened to Mark Driscoll’s sermon, and it was excellent. I don’t know for sure, but Mark Driscoll could be speaking about the City Church inviting Rabbi Daniel Lapin to preach about old testament prosperity. In the sermon, he tells about hearing an advertisement on Christian radio to come to the church and listen to the Rabbi teach. He preaches from Nehemiah 13 where the Jews allowed pagans to live and preach in the temple, and Nehemiah came back to kick them out. He then tells the congregation of a local church that is doing that today by allowing a Rabbi (who does not follow Christ) to teach the congregation. The City Church is doing exactly that.
I recommend listening to the whole sermon here: http://media.marshillchurch.org/
Select: Anger and Action (Nehemiah 13:1-14)
You can see a small clip of it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_MLUuNKjZU
In regards to a church having a non-Christian Rabbi teach your church about money, in my opinion it shows which is more important to the church between Jesus Christ and mammon.
Isaiah 30:9-11
That this is a rebellious people,
Lying children,
Children who will not hear the law of the LORD;
Who say to the seers, “Do not see,”
And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things;
Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.
Get out of the way,
Turn aside from the path,
Cause the Holy One of Israel
To cease from before us.”Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;

Has anyone sent Mark Droscoll’s excerpt to TCC? Somebody should. Someone will probably filter it however, and delete it before any elders can be jared by the truth (which they desperately need). But I pray and hope it would be otherwise. I hope Droscoll’s awesome stance on the gospel influences many U.S. churhces. Namely, the churches which put their ear plugs in while Christ continually pounds away on thier doors, Rev 3:20

the business of the Church is John 14:6 and Romans 1:16-17, Matthew 28:19-20 to name a few Biblical truth. It’s sad when church people begin to lose that focus of heavenly true riches and begin to fashion themselves after the things of this world. That another sign that we need another heaven sent revival that will set us free from Sins, Dead Works and False Teachings.
Praying for Holy Word Revival in Jesus name, first in the Chruch, then among Israel/ Jewish people and the Nations.
Pray everyday!

First of all, after watching the video I don’t believe he was talking about the City Church because he described the conference differently than anything that was ever advertised.
Now, it is true that the City Church did invite rabbi Lapin to thier prosperity with a purpose conference, while I understand scripturally why this unnerves people Pastor Wendell did a really good job prefacing the session explaining why the rabbi was there, what he will be teaching on and what the church believes in. The session that he taught in was also just that a teaching session on a Friday morning.
As for the church getting heat for their prosperity with a purpose conference. I actually urge people who speak against it to actually download some of the sessions and listen to them (they should be online soon at http://www.thecity.org ). I was there at the conference and they stated several times that they do not believe in “prosperity theology” and while this may seem confusing at first (I was confused), this is why they spend 3 days teaching what they believe about prosperity and how it is not about money.
On top of that, the pastors at the City Church constantly urge the congregation not to take their word at face value but that they must research the Bible for themselves to learn if what they are preaching is sound with the word of God.
While I understand most of the commentary about these conferences and these pastors I get frustrated when the person complaining is just going off of a little bit of info. Here Mark Driscoll is ranting off of a radio advertisement… He does not have the full picture.

Hello Seattlegirl,
If you really believe they are not part of the prosperity theology, you should look at the list of people they invite to speak at their church. Look at the books they sell…
All you need to do is listen to this sermon from last year…
http://www.thecity.org/message/prophetic_ministry_on_covenant_wealth/
Listen to that and tell me how that is biblical…
Also did you read this post?
http://www.doctrinetalk.com/?p=59
Listen to that sermon and tell me:
1. If and how I misrepresent Wendell
2. If and how I misrepresent scripture
Read this post:
http://www.doctrinetalk.com/?p=64
Please read those posts and listen to the sermons and tell me where I am in error. Nobody who has come on here to support Wendell has backed up what they belive with scripture (including a prosperity pastor friend of Wendell’s). It is all emotion and trust in Wendell.
The man who wrote “prosperity with a purpose” does not subscribe to the prosperity theology? I have a bridge to sell you.
His book claims Jesus was rich, the Apostles were rich…they invite Hagin, Cho, Hickey, Leroy Thompson, sell Benny Hinn’s books…birds of a feather…
Did you see these posts?

If you take the time to do that, please write back with what you think. I would be curious to know.
Thanks,
Craig

Craig, I listened to this message. Here are some quotes.
“The Church has a tendency to leave the Holy Spirit out of wealth. And do not want to mention wealth along with the Holy Spirit name. But the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of wealth. (Amen from congregation) Because He is the Spirit of God. And He desires to show the covenent strong in your life, if you let Him. (Amen from Pastors in front) Listen to what the word of God say, “the Spirit of God is the Spirit of wealth.” The Holy Spirit live in all of us, but if we do not cooperate with Him, if we have fear, fear in our lives, fear in our hearts about God’s increase…” (then goes off on tangent how some have problems with rich people) I have idea which verse he was looking at when he said the the Spirit of God is the Spirit of wealth. I’d like to know.
“God’s going to use a remenent (remnant) to finance this end time”
“Here’s what the Lord spoke to me. He said “Tell them, based on My word, and based on what you said on My behalf, the Mount will fall. If they shout or make some kind of move, from this night forward, whatsoever they do… shall prosper.” (and the crowd goes wild!!!)
I don’t understand why people focus so much on this life. This life is nothing and will be over with soon! That is a great thing because we weren’t meant to be here forever but in the presence of Christ!
Seattlegirl, if I were a Pastor I wouldn’t mind letting non-believers teach their area of study whether it be science, philosophy, psychology, etc so long as it wasn’t leading people astray. But I would never let an unbeliever (and an emphatic on at that) teach the Bible to my congregation! This is setting myself up for greater judgment, and the unbeliever for greater judgment. James 3:1 “Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” What do you think?

Mark Driscoll had John Piper at his church recently and they were talking about the false prosperity gospel. They even started naming name like Creflo Dollar, etc. Then a couple weeks later, he goes and speaks at the City Church, and they are a leading polluters of the word-faith prosperity gospel in the northwest. Little bit of a hypocrite if you ask me.

Hey Kevin, the way I figure it is that if Driscoll preaches at TCC then it’s a good thing for people there to hear something different, but MH would probably never let them preach a prosperity gospel sermon at their church.
